What is hyaluronic acid?

The function of hyaluronic acid is to moisturise and protect the skin from external aggression. In fact, thanks to its ability to retain water, it plays a part in the deep, continuous hydration of tissues for a smooth, radiant appearance! This is why hyaluronic acid is considered to be the "cement of the skin".

It is a molecule naturally present in the human body, and plays a crucial role in maintaining the skin's hydration, suppleness and youthfulness. It is found in a multitude of products, from moisturisers to serums and nutricosmetic food supplements.

The benefits of Hyaluronic Acid for the skin

  1. Provides deep hydration: Hyaluronic acid has the unique ability to retain water up to 1000 times its weight, providing deep hydration to the skin. This hydration improves the skin's texture, making it softer, smoother and visibly hydrated.
  2. Reduces the signs of age ing: By filling in the intercellular spaces in the skin, hyaluronic acid reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. This miracle molecule also contributes to skin firmness and elasticity, fighting the visible signs of ageing.
  3. Suitable for all skin types: Hyaluronic acid is renowned for its compatibility with all skin types. Whether your skin is dry, oily, sensitive or combination, it provides the necessary hydration without causing irritation or undesirable reactions.

How can I incorporate hyaluronic acid into my skincare routine?

Product choice: opt for a serum or cream containing high-quality hyaluronic acid. Serums are particularly effective for deep penetration, while creams are suitable for surface moisturisation. Tip: apply your serum before your cream, to help the moisturising agents penetrate the skin more effectively.

Hyaluronic acid-based food supplements can also support skin hydration from within, offering additional benefits for the whole body.

How long does it take to see the effects of hyaluronic acid?

The effects of hyaluronic acid can vary from person to person. However, many people report an improvement in hydration and a reduction in wrinkles after a few weeks of regular use.

Is hyaluronic acid safe for all skin types?

Hyaluronic acid can be safely combined with other active ingredients such as vitamin C, retinoids and AHAs/BHAs. This combination can reinforce the anti-ageing benefits and contribute to radiant, healthy skin. Side effects of hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid can cause side effects that vary depending on the method of use:

  • Injections can cause redness, swelling, pain, bruising and, rarely, infections or granulomas at the injection site.
  • Dermal applications are generally well tolerated, but may cause skin reactions in people with sensitive skin.
  • Food supplements are also well tolerated, but may occasionally cause slight bloating.

However, it is advisable to consult your doctor before starting any hyaluronic acid-based treatment, especially if you have pre-existing medical conditions or are using it at the same time as other treatments.

Origin of hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid was discovered over 80 years ago in the vitreous humour of an ox, a transparent gelatinous substance that fills the space between the lens and the retina at the back of the eye. It is composed mainly of water, collagen and hyaluronic acid, giving it a viscous consistency. Its role is to maintain the spherical shape of the eye and allow light to be transmitted to the retina without distortion.

This substance was then isolated by two German researchers, Meyer and Palmer. This discovery showed that this molecule is naturally present in our bodies and is one of the essential constituents of the skin's dermis (one of the three layers of skin, located between the epidermis and the hypodermis).
